Rúrí // Iceland

One of Iceland’s most internationally prominent artists of today, Rúrí works in a wide variety of media, from sculptures, installations, and environmental art to multimedia and performance. She highlights in her work not only the beauty of the natural environment and the human relationship to and presence within it, but also documents how industrial interests are bringing about the flooding of a unique highland ecosystem in her country.
With Flooding ecological wear and tear is illustrated using the example of the Icelandic Toefrafoss waterfall, which is disappearing under a rising water reservoir that has been created by a colossal dam for a hydroelectric plant, built to power an aluminium smelter. This is the latest work of the series Endangered Waters, works who´s concept is simultaneously local and global.
